Millions of Americans this year will vote in the next presidential election, and many of the undecided voters will seek reliable information about key issues and candidates. This need underscores the importance of press freedom.
While Americans generally value the idea of press freedom, they are more divided over the issue of protecting a free press or preventing the spread of misinformation. White Americans and Republicans are more likely to favor protecting press freedom over curbing misinformation, according to a survey by the nonprofit Pew Research Center.
About half of U.S. adults (51%) said the publication of false information should always be prevented, even if it means press freedom could be limited. Meanwhile, 46% of Americans say press freedom should always be protected, even if it means false information could be published.
