Car Domain Acquires Streetfire.net, 'USA Today' Launches Online Auto Community

StreetFire.comSignaling further industry consolidation, online automotive community Car Domain on Wednesday announced the acquisition of automotive video file-sharing site StreetFire.net. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

With an expected reach of some 5 million unique monthly users -- and over 9 million including video player widget distribution -- the combined company will continue to invest in product improvements to both CarDomain.com and StreetFire.net.

"StreetFire has developed a great online video platform and built a tremendous asset of automotive video content," said Alex Algard, founder and chairman of Car Domain, in a statement. "We have been long-time fans."

Glenn Rogers, previously CEO of StreetFire, will run the combined company as CEO.

"In sharing technology and resources," said Rogers, "we are able to maintain the cultures of both communities while enhancing the functionality and reach of the independent entities."

Community rivals in the online car space include Car Space, Yahoo's Autos and AOL Autos. On Wednesday, USA Today launched its own online auto community moderated by Chris Woodyard. Open Road will serve as a mainstream, consumer-oriented site for both auto enthusiasts and everyday Americans.

Founded in 1998 and based in Seattle, Car Domain's two million registered users have posted 650,000 active ride profiles with a combined four million aftermarket modifications, all accessible by component type.

Based in Los Angeles, StreetFire.net brings video-sharing technology for users to upload videos, view user-created video online, and embed these videos onto their own sites. This technology has allowed StreetFire.net to reach 250 million video streams annually.
