Honda Turns Times Square Into A 3D Play Station

Honda created a 3D circus in Times Square last Thursday with "CRZ3dNYC," an event showcasing the 2011 Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid.

Targeting Gen X & Yers who love gaming and music, Honda chose an ideal venue to showcase its car with a heavy dose of 3D technology.

The event included racing simulators for gamers to play "Gran Turismo5" on PS3 in 3D; the CR-Z is featured in-game.

In addition, a photo booth with a 3D backdrop was erected, screen-printed shirts were created for passersby ,and a 3D commercial ran in Times Square, a first according to Honda. "Eclipse" was shown on the Clear Channel Spectacolor HD screen, the lone screen in Times Square that handles 3D. Watch it here.

The event concluded with a performance by Pharell Williams of N.E.R.D. Check out a compilation of event highlights here.

RPA, Honda's creative and media buying agency, organized the event.

According to Tom Peyton, senior manager of national advertising for American Honda Motor Co., the event "puts Honda at the forefront of innovation by using 3D technology across platforms in a campaign and creating an event that appeals to the target lifestyle for the CR-Z. This event integrates advertising, gaming and music into one 3D milestone event."

Honda also used 3D in print and online ads promoting CR-Z.

Peyton said creating a 3D ad campaign proved educational for the company. "There was definitely a learning curve, especially since there are different types of 3D technologies available. We had to learn all of them and determine the best one to use in each medium."
