Univision-HBC Deal Hits Snag

  • March 12, 2003
While it was believed the Federal Communications Commission was ready to sign off on the deal, the Commission this week requested more information from the two companies about how it will operate Entravision after the deal has closed. Under an agreement with the Justice Department, Univision has six years to cut its 27% stake in Entravision to 10%. The FCC wants to know what the company’s plans are in the meantime. “Virtually all of Entravision's television stations are affiliated with a Univision-owned network We are concerned, therefore, that a right to approve the sale of any station affiliated with a Univision-owned network would give Univision excessive influence over decisions taken in the ordinary course of Entravision’s business,” Video Division Chief Barbara Kreisman wrote in a letter to the two companies. Both companies have until Friday to respond to the information request. Friday had been the day they hoped to close the deal, but that appears like it won’t happen.
