  • The Irvine, Calif. Office of Bates USA, which a year ago had $275 million in billings and roughly 150 employees, closed Friday with 20 staffers and no clients. The decision to shut the office follows the loss of the Cordiant-owned shop's largest account, Hyundai Motor America. Earlier this year Bates lost creative and media duties on the client's corporate account, with creative going to The Richards Group in Dallas and media moving to Carat in Los Angeles. Bates relationship with the car maker officially ended Sept. 30 when its contract for the dealer portion of the account expired.

  • ROBB DEFILIPPIS will be joining Deutsch as Senior Vice President, Director of Print Services. He will be responsible for all print production, traffic, art buying, and all studio services. He was most recently Vice President, Director of Print Services at BBDO, NY.

  • Veteran marketing executive JOHN COSTELLO is leaving his job as Chief Global Marketing Officer at Yahoo! Inc. after less than a year to take over as Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Home Depot. In a career spanning 25 years Costello began in brand management and marketing positions at Procter & Gamble Co. He later was Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Pepsi-Cola USA and then moved to President and Chief Operating Officer of Nielsen Marketing Research USA. He was also past Chairman of the Association of National Advertisers.

  • Also at Yahoo! Inc.: JAMES FANELLA, who was Senior Vice-President of Business and Enterprise Services, has been let go. The departure marks one of the first big moves by the company's new Chief Operating Officer, Dan Rosensweig. Steve Boom, who was heading up the European enterprise solutions business, will be assuming Fanella's duties.

  • DARLENE GUDEA has joined Trade Show Executive magazine as Publisher and Editor. Gudea began her career in the trade show industry in 1978 as Managing Editor of Tradeshow Week, published by Reed Business Information. She was promoted six times and became VP/Publisher & Editor-in-Chief in December 1986. In March 2000, she joined Advanstar Communications, Santa Ana, CA as Group Publisher of the Call Center/CRM Group. In September 2001, she became Director of the Magazine Division of Hispanic Business Media, Santa Barbara, CA.

  • TOBY GRAFF has been promoted to Vice President, Public Affairs, from Director, Corporate Communications at Lifetime Television. Prior to Lifetime, Graff served for more than two years as Deputy Press Secretary for then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. Previously, Graff worked on healthcare and welfare reform for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She began her political career as Assistant Press Secretary for the Clinton/Gore 1992 Presidential Campaign in the Frankfurt, Kentucky office.

  • Avenue A has appointed longtime McKinsey & Company Director, ANDREW PARSONS, to its recently formed advisory board. Joining him on the board will be LOIS MILLER, Hearst Magazines Vice President of Advertising Sales and Marketing for the western region. From 1976-2000, Parsons worked at McKinsey & Company, where he most recently was a Director and Senior Partner. Since 1992, Miller has worked to raise Hearst's level of involvement with West Coast clients and ad agencies through multi-media marketing programs. Other members of the six-person advisory board include Graham Phillips, former CEO of Ogilvy & Mather; Ervin Shames, former General Foods USA Chief Executive; Brian McAndrews, Avenue A president; and Dr. Jack Sansola, a member of the company's board of directors.

  • BOB LONIGRO has joined EA.com as Director of Eastern Sales. Bob was formerly a Sales Director at pogo.com which was purchased by EA in April of 2001.

  • Captivate Network, Inc., the national news and entertainment network, announced that GARY VILLANTE has recently joined the company as National Account Manager. Gary has a wealth of sales experience, previously serving as the Manager of East Coast Sales for Great American Country Radio.

  • NANCY MONSARRAT has been named the Nike's new U.S. Advertising Director, replacing Rob Deflorio. Monsarrat leaves the position of Asia Pacific Advertising Director, a post she held since 1999.

  • DICK MATULLO, veteran Media Director at Interpublic Group's Austin Kelley Advertising in Atlanta has left and formed ULTRA MEDIA, INC., a media planning and buying service. Matullo joined the Atlanta agency 13 years ago from the Chicago office of NW Ayer. He spent 20 years in Chicago working at Ayer, Clinton E. Frank and Young & Rubicam. Before moving to Chicago he was with Young & Rubicam in New York.

  • Havas-owned Arnold has completed a deal to add most of the clients and staff of Panoramic Communications' Earle Palmer Brown's office in Bethesda, MD. About 30 EPB staffers, including Managing Partner CHARLES JONES and Creative Director WOODY KAY, will make the move to Arnold's office in McLean, Va. Both become Executive VPs at Arnold, McLean. Jones will oversee agency operations; Kay will be Executive CD, an open post since Matt Smith's departure four months ago. KEN UMANSKY is the outpost's President.

  • The organisers of the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival announced that DAN WIEDEN, Chief Creative Officer and CEO of Wieden+Kennedy Portland, New York, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, will be the Jury President of the 2003 Film and Press & Outdoor juries. It is the first time Wieden has accepted to sit on an international jury in the past decade.

  • GREGORY R. RUSH has been appointed Associate Publisher & Chief Operating Officer for Herald Media Inc.'s Community Newspaper Company. Rush joined CNC earlier this year from Sun Trust Robinson Humphrey where he was a Vice President and a founding member of the firm’s Boston office.

  • LOUIS TOSTO is joining BusinessWeek as Sales Vice President, Eastern Region. Prior to joining BusinessWeek, Tosto was most recently the General Manager for SmartMoney.com where he had P&L responsibility and oversaw sales and marketing, product development, technical and financial operations. He rose to the General Manager position after holding positions as Associate Publisher and National Advertising Director. Before he moved to SmartMoney.com, Tosto was the New York Advertising Manager for SmartMoney magazine from 1995 to 1999 and an Account Executive from 1993 to 1995.

  • Gemstar TV Guide named JEFF SHELL Chief Executive, replacing Henry Yuen, who will continue as Chairman in a non-executive capacity. Yuen, under a new five-year employment agreement, was named to lead a business unit formed to pursue international business development opportunities. Shell has been Gemstar's Chief Operating Officer since April.

  • Jobing.com, LLC, a private equity-backed, locally focused employment Web site, announced the appointment of ALLEN R. DUNAWAY as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Jobing.com, Dunaway was the Chief Financial Officer at Opnix Inc., an Internet traffic management company. Dunaway was also Vice President and CFO at medical device company Orthologic Corp.

  • BoostWorks, Inc. announced the appointment of WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE SMITH, JR. as Director of Marketing. Before joining BoostWorks, Smith worked as Vice President at Albrycht McClure & Partners, a "virtual" public relations and marketing communications firm, where he was responsible for all business development and marketing communications efforts.

  • Maritz Research, a marketing research firm, has named JIM STONE to the newly created position of Chief Research Officer. Stone joined Maritz in 1985 and served as Director of International Research and Development. Prior to joining Maritz, he worked for Chilton Research Services, and the New Jersey Department of Human Services.

  • The T&O Group, a leading Southern California advertising, interactive and public relations agency, and member of the Worldwide Partner network, announced the promotion of JOHN RUTLEDGE to Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. A veteran of more than 20 years in the advertising business, Rutledge began his career with the accounting firm Deloitte & Touche before joining the advertising agency Cochrane, Chase, Livingston & Co. where he rose through the ranks from controller to CFO and partner. He then joined Roberts Mealer & Co. in 1995, which was acquired by T&O in 1998. He became a partner of T&O in 1999.

  • Diametrics Medical, Inc. announced the appointment of healthcare and diagnostics industry veteran STEVEN EMERY as Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales, Marketing and Business Development. Emery has more than 26 years experience with Hewlett-Packard Medical Systems and most recently with Philips Medical Systems as the Director of Marketing in the Cardiac and Monitoring Systems' Point of Care Diagnostics group.

  • Skanska USA Building Inc., the U.S.-based construction services arm of the $15.9-billion Sweden-based Skanska AB, said today it has appointed THOMAS B. CRANE to the position of Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications. Prior to joining Skanska, he was serving as Director, Corporate Media Relations, for Honeywell International Inc.

  • HAKAN LINDSKOG, President and Chief Operating Officer of MediaBay, Inc., will also become Chief Executive Officer., replacing current Chief Executive Officer, Michael Herrick, who will remain as a member of the Board of Directors and will become a consultant to the Company. Lindskog joined the Company in June 2000 as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer of its Audio Book Club division and became President of MediaBay in November 2001. Prior to joining MediaBay, Lindskog was Group Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of International Masters Publishers Group.

  • Titan Outdoor Holdings, LLC, a leading provider of outdoor advertising, announced that it has appointed DONALD R. ALLMAN as the new President and Chief Executive Officer. Previously, Allman served as the President of Transportations Displays Outdoor, now Viacom Outdoor, where he spent sixteen years leading its business development and advertising sales efforts. Before joining TDI, Allman held key sales positions for Foster and Kleiser, now Clear Channel Outdoor, in Ohio and California. Most recently, Allman founded All Out Media, an organization that identifies and creates Outdoor Advertising sites for retailers as well as public and private real estate entities.

  • Macrovision Corporation, a leader in digital rights management and copy protection technologies, announced that ADAM SEXTON has joined Macrovision as Vice President of Marketing for the Audio group. Sexton was previously Chief Marketing Officer for Supertracks, a pioneering technology company focused on digital music and the Internet. Prior to Supertracks, he was Vice President of Product Management for Arista records, where he was responsible for the marketing of all of Arista's pop and rock artists, including Santana, Sarah McLachlan, Dido, and Whitney Houston, among many others.
