• Why Is Apple Hiring AR Experts?
    Apple has hired Zeyu Li, who most recently worked at augmented reality startup Magic Leap. Li adds to a number of recent hires with expertise in AR. As such, “It looks like the company is working on some kind of display or technology that shows computer images superimposed on top of the real world,” Business Insider suggests.
  • Tim Cook More Bullish On AR Than VR
    Unlike Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook apparently has higher hopes for augmented reality than virtual reality. "My own view is that augmented reality is the larger of the two, probably by far,” Apple’s CEO tells ABC News. To its credit, AR allows consumers to be more “present,” in Cook’s words. That said, “Both of these are incredibly interesting," according to Cook.
  • Twitter Taps Cheddar For Live Content
    Twitter just partnered with news startup Cheddar to live stream content. Yes, “Twitter is doubling down on live-streaming content, this time focusing on business news,” The Verge reports. “The programs will be aimed at a millennial audience, and is surely meant to extend Twitter’s value beyond the timeline.” Per the new pact, Cheddar is expected to broadcast two new shows.
  • Facebook Earns Ire Of Norwegian Newspaper
    Norway’s largest newspaper just used its front page to condemn Facebook for censoring a historic photograph of the Vietnam War. Singling out its CEO, “Espen Egil Hansen, the editor-in-chief and CEO of Aftenposten, accused Zuckerberg of thoughtlessly ‘abusing your power’ over the social media site,” The Guardian Reports.  
  • Snapchat Eying IPO
    Snapchat reportedly wants to go public within a year. “Snapchat has been talking to investment bankers about filing for an IPO towards the end of this year or early in 2017,” The Information reports, citing sources. “That could put the company on track for a public offering next year, coming out ahead of other hotly anticipated private tech startups.”
  • Instagram Adding Features For IPhone 7
    Instagram users got some good news during Apple’s iPhone 7 launch, this week. “The iPhone 7 Plus telephoto zoom lens will be usable by dragging a single finger up and down in Instagram,” TechCrunch reports. “Haptic feedback will help you know just how zoomed you are, and could help you stay in the 2X optical zoom offered by the iPhone 7 Plus without straying into digital zoom that degrades quality.”
  • Microsoft Making Skype Killer
    Under the Skype brand, Microsoft is reportedly developing a service that will compete directly with Slack dubbed Skype Teams. “Skype Teams is going to be Microsoft’s take on messaging apps for teams,” MSPowerUser reports, citing sources. “Skype Teams will include a lot of similar features which you’ll find on Slack.”
  • Does Snapchat Have Serious Hardware Ambitions?
    Snapchat is joining the industry group that runs the Bluetooth wireless standard. “The move, which follows a string of new recruits and acquisitions from the world of consumer electronics, will fuel speculation that the photo-sharing start-up is building a pair of augmented reality (AR) goggles,” the Financial Times reports.
  • Alcatel Has Bold VR Headset 'Vision'
    Engadget considers the Vision -- Alcatel’s new virtual reality headset. Critically, “While Samsung’s Gear VR requires a smartphone and full-fledged headsets like the Oculus Rift require a computer, Alcatel's newly announced Vision doesn't need either,” it writes. “It's a standalone VR headset, which is still something of a rarity in the VR world.”
