The Associated Press, hoping to cut expenses by 10%, laid off 14 union workers yesterday and closed four U.S. bureaus, according to the News Media Guild, reports Bloomberg. The four shuttered bureaus
were in Dayton, Ohio; Roanoke, Virginia; Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Jacksonville, Florida. AP fired 57 Guild workers on Nov. 17, according to the union. In its annual report, AP said that salaries
and labor-related expenses rose 1.8% in 2008. Net income rose 4.5 percent to $25.1 million, from $24 million in 2007.
