Hulu, a joint venture of NBC, News Corp and Disney, is coming under pressure from the companies that supply its content. They want Hulu to earn more ad dollars and set up a subscription service,
asking consumers to pay a monthly fee to watch some of the shows on the site. The site says it is open to the idea, which may be tested via the iPad app.
Hulu's 200 content suppliers, some
big and some small, receive 50% to 70% of the ad revenue Hulu generates from their videos. Some of the media companies complain privately about the small checks they get from the deals, even as the
site has grown. Monthly video streams on Hulu have more than tripled in a year, to 903 million in January, according to ComScore.
