MeasureCast, Inc. today announced that Internet radio stations measured by MeasureCast streamed more hours of news, talk, and entertainment programming during the week of September 17 than ever before
- this after three consecutive weeks of slight declines in the total number of hours streamed by on-line broadcasters.
The growing popularity of streaming radio caused the MeasureCast Internet
Radio Index to jump 11% (Index at 238) during the week of Sept. 17 to Sept. 23. The previous all-time high (Index at 229), occurred during the week ending Aug. 26. Internet radio listening has more
than doubled since January.
London-based terrestrial broadcasters jazzfm and Virgin Radio finished the week one and two respectively in the weekly MeasureCast Top 25T list of streaming radio
stations. For the week, 15 stations experienced an increase in the total time spent listening (TTSL) to their programming, and 19 broadcasters attracted larger on-line audiences. Twelve finishers were
Internet-only stations, including Top 25 newcomer, XACT Radio.
Other facts for the week of September 17 - 23:
- 80% of all listening occurred between 5 a.m. Pacific and 5 p.m. Pacific.

The peak listening hour was 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern), with 8.5% of the day's listening.
- 12% of the week's TTSL occurred over the weekend.
- The peak listening day was Thursday, Sept.
20 with 21.5% of all TTSL occurring on this day.
- The largest single age group listening to Internet radio last week: 25-34 year-olds (30%).
- 56% of listeners were under 35; 26% were younger
than 25, and 7% were over 55.
- 70% of listeners were men; 30% were women.
- Top streaming nations include Canada, France, Japan, Mexico the United Kingdom and the United States.
- 31% of
U.S. listeners were from the South, with the Western U.S. accounting for 30%.
