Cell Phone Dependency

I remember the days when I remembered everyone's phone numbers whether I used them often or not. I remember looking things up in a phonebook when I wanted to find out the movie times, order a pizza, or just to find a local store. Taking it way back, I remember in elementary school when my friends and I would send notes to each other in class.

Those days are long gone. I can do all these things and so much more with one mobile device. I can do all these things at once with just a couple taps here and there on one screen, (if I had the Droid application).

Right now, I'm a little behind because I have the Samsung Behold. It's still a touch screen phone, but just since last August 2009 when I bought it, cell phones have jumped a whole another century ahead of my dinosaur aged phone.

However, I still depend on it for everything and if I ever lost it, my world would come tumbling down! I literally will make sure my cell phone bill is paid before I make sure I have utilities or even pay rent and have a place to stay. My means of communication is key in my life, and more than likely most people today would agree.

Have cell phones crippled our ability to do simple everyday tasks ourselves? I often wonder, are my memory skills low because I don't have to remember anything because I can quickly search for answers on my phone? If I didn't have mapquest or GPS on my cell would I be able to find my way home?

Do we give technology too much control or power in our lives? Just because technology advances, must we change ourselves to accommodate the technological world? Or do we humans make sure the technology accommodates us? These are questions that randomly run through my mind on a pretty consistent basis.

Older generations may not think the millennials worry about these situations, but I am here to say that my level of dependency on my cell phone scares me.

On the other hand, I couldn't imagine my life without it!
