MeasureCast, Inc., the company that provides streaming broadcasters with next-day streaming audience size and demographics data, today released its Internet radio demographics report and top 50
Internet radio stations chart for December, 2001.
The 993 online radio stations measured by MeasureCast in December streamed a total of 13,342,814 hours of music, news, and talk programming to
2,035,838 people worldwide. The majority of people listening to stations measured by MeasureCast resided in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Mexico. In the U.S., 32% of
listeners were in the South, and 29% were in the West.
MeasureCast says that 70% of Internet radio fans were men. Also, 56% of listeners were under 35 years of age, 27% were younger than 25,
and 7% were over 55. But the largest single age group listening to Internet radio last month was 25-34 year-olds (29%).
Additionally, data shows that 80% of all listening occurred between 5
a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific, illustrating that most Internet radio listening is done during traditional work hours. While more people listen through home computers, office workers listen longer.
According to MeasureCast, the peak listening hour was 11 a.m. Pacific, with 8% of the month's listening. The peak listening day was Tuesday, December 11, with 5% of all total time spent listening
(TTSL) occurring this day (a total of 681,741 hours were streamed). The slowest day for streaming radio was Tuesday, December 25, with only 1% of the month's listening. This marked the only occasion
in 2001 when the total number of hours streamed on a weekday was less than during a weekend day. 17% of December's TTSL took place on weekends.
December's Top Streaming Stations, Networks:
Virgin Radio became the number one station in December by streaming 739,651 hours of music to 99,878 people. JazzFm won second place by streaming 682,224 hours to 157,225 listeners. Third ranked
