NBC, Theater Operators Plan Digital Network

  • October 21, 2002
NBC and theater operator Regal CineMedia Corp. have signed a multiyear agreement to provide original programming at RCM’s digital theater networks. The theater operator is deploying a state-of-the-art national network for the delivery of digital video content, including sports, entertainment and educational programming as well as on-screen and in-lobby marketing and advertising products. The Digital Content Network is being installed in about 400 theaters covering 19 of the top 20 and 43 of the top 52 markets through the end of 2003. When completed, the Regal DCN will be the world’s largest network with digital distribution capabilities on a targeted basis to about 4,600 theater screens and 1,700 42-inch high-resolution plasma screens in theater lobbies. The Regal DCN will be launched with NBC and additional programming and marketing partners in 12 markets during Q1 2003 and other markets through the rest of the year.

NBC will create original, short-form entertainment programming to be presented on theater screens prior to the feature presentation. In addition to on-screen promotional programs, NBC will also use RCM’s 42-inch in-lobby plasma screens and its digital out-of-home screens in its network of fast-service restaurants and convenience stores for advertising and promotional opportunities.
