Next Generation's New Pathways

Digital devices are terrific -- they make life easier, faster, more accessible. But they also make us more reliant on technology and less on interpersonal exchanges. A recent MediaVest survey concluded users are "deeply, emotionally attached to their mobile devices, with 38% saying they wouldn't give them up for any amount of money." Really? I'd divulge state secrets if someone took my MacBook for an hour. But it's on the social media front -- where the user stats are staggering -- that the future of communication may change. Here's my prediction: Given the amount of texting and Facebooking among the 15-25 crowd, I'm guessing the next hot professions will be intimacy counselor and occupational therapist. While legions will have to school this demo on the importance of eye contact, reading body language and the joys of real-life exchanges, the OT brigade can repair strained thumbs.
