Set-Top Box Lexicon: Box Related Measurement Terms for STB Data

CIMM is taking a pro-active role in advancing new media nomenclature and processes with both its Lexicon(terms and definitions associated with Set-Top Box data measurement) and Asset Identification Primer (glossary of asset terms). These documents form the basis of the Word-A-Week column which offers a common language for Set-Top Box nomenclature that can expedite the rollout of the data for its many industry applications.

In industry-standard media measurement, the generally accepted measurement increments can be in homes or persons. In the world of Set-Top-Box data, the measurement requires an additional increment which is the Box. Generally speaking, U.S. households have an average of 2+ set-top boxes but this can vary by operator and footprint.

CIMM DEFINITION : Rating based on the Set-Top Box rather than household or person.

2 : The percentage of available STBs within a sample or population or a census that is watching a program, or during a time period or an ad or any piece of content out of the measured population or census. (Source: Nielsen)
