Gentlemen’s Quarterly editor Art Cooper will retire from the Conde Nast publication on June 1, 20 years to the day that he joined the magazine. “I’ve been think about this for a long time and it was
a really hard decision,” said Cooper, 65. He exits the magazine at a time when GQ is facing increased competition for both advertising and readers from the laddie titles like FHM, Maxim, and Stuff.
According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, GQ’s paid circulation grew 5.9% to 803,652 in the second half of 2002. Ad pages were flat in 2002, although the title posted a 17% increase in January.
