Does Google+ Video Threaten YouTube?

Google is now letting members of its Google+ network post video recordings as updates to their “circles.” In the video-sharing menu, Google+ now features a “Record video” option that turns on the webcam. “After recording, the video can be shared as an attachment to a post,” reports ReadWriteWeb, before suggesting that the new feature could cannibalize activity on YouTube. “Google+ just got a feature that takes a bite out of YouTube,” it writes. “This kind of personal broadcasting is something YouTube is known for, but now informal video updates can be shared straight to Google+ circles.”

“These video status updates bypass YouTube and go straight to the stream.” Said stream already lets users post an array of content, including animated GIFs and Google Music players. Still, given YouTube’s immense size, it’s unlikely that Google+ represents much of a threat. In fact, the two Google services might prove more complimentary than anything else. Google+ Hangouts, the live video chat feature, already uses YouTube for recording, and also facilitates group watching of YouTube videos.

Notes RWW: “Google began integrating YouTube and Google+ last October, and YouTube's new homepage now features Google+ prominently.” Encouraging quick video search, Google+ pages also feature floating YouTube tabs.
