In its bid to position itself as a destination for premium content on the Web, YouTube on Wednesday said it would provide live Webcasts of the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games to viewers in 64 markets across Asia and Africa.

Through 10 channels from the International Olympic Committee, the Google-owned site will offer high-definition video of various events at this summer’s games, which begin in late July.

In all, YouTube will host 2,200 hours of free, live programming to Web users in India, Singapore, Malaysia and Kenya, among other destinations. China, however, will not be one of them, as YouTube is banned in the country.
