Popcornflix, the ad-supported, free streaming movie service, announced that its app has been downloaded 400,000 times on Roku, whose viewers streamed 350,000 movies in May.
As GigaOm’s Janko Roettgers points out, Popcornflix’s selection of a few thousand movie titles pales in comparison to the offerings on Netflix and Hulu. “We don’t have huge movies -- we have good movies,” an exec says.
Still, those are impressive numbers for a movie service that just added Roku compatibility about six months ago, Roettgers says. Popcornflix, which is a subsidiary of Screen Media Ventures, is currently trying to get its movies on other Smart TV platforms.
