When the Wall Street Journal launches a new weekend edition in 2005, it will face some hefty competition -- itself. That's because, starting Friday at 6 p.m., the Journal's online version will provide
content to Yahoo!'s Finance page for its own lifestyle-focused weekend iteration.
The site, bearing the slogan "Life Outside Trading Hours," will carry articles culled from BusinessWeek and
Forbes, in addition to the online Journal. Pieces will deal with topics such as purchasing homes or choosing a wedding location.
"Our users have interests outside of strict financial
information," says John Voelcker, Yahoo!'s director of product management for personal finance. He says that during the course of the last year, Yahoo! surveyed its users to determine their
non-finance-related interests. Yahoo!, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., hopes the new offering will lure luxury car manufacturers and travel industry advertisers to its site, says Voelcker. He adds that
Yahoo! already has advertisers on board for this weekend, but declines to name them.
