When Bad Things Happen To TV Characters

"I tell stories. Not all of them have happy endings. Not everyone makes it home," writes former "The Walking Dead" showrunner Glen Mazzara in a piece on "The Heartbreaking Necessity Of Killing Good Characters" -- a topic newly relevant in the wake of the "Breaking Bad" series finale in which protagonist Walter White died.

Mazzara details what it's like when a character's death is revealed, both to the actor who plays him and in the writers' room: "Many actors immediately try to persuade you to change your mind. If the material's as good as it can be, you probably won't. But it's your job to talk them through it. To listen."

Fascinating behind-the-scenes piece.
