Americans consume 270 pounds of meat per year on average, well above any other country in the world. The 10-year-old Meatless Monday campaign has been an
effort to deal with this. The campaign encourages cutting out meat one day a week to improve health and the environment. Several studies have demonstrated that people are more likely to try to quit
smoking, begin a diet or exercise regimen, schedule doctors' appointments or adopt other healthy behaviors on Monday.
