10 Social Networks To Check Out In Boston

Boston-based social networks are plentiful. That's what we've discovered over the past week, after a slew of social network founders reached out following an earlier post about seven social networks headquartered in the area.

Here are 10 more, bringing the list of Boston-based social networks to almost 20. This list includes a social network devoted to achieving personal milestones, one for online gamers, and another for physicians. Because of a lack of company information, two additional social networks aren't listed below (Salem-based Ravelry, an online knit and crochet community, and Boston-based social marketplace Trade Grouper).


Amino by Narvii

  • Location: Boston
  • Offers: A network of mobile apps, each of which is exclusively dedicated to a specific interest ranging from video games, sports and travel to cooking, pets, anime and music.
  • Funding to date: About $500,000
  • Investors include: Angel investors Joe Caruso, Semyon Dukach, Michael Dornbrook, Scott Heller, Will Herman and others
  • Employees: Currently two co-founders and a few interns but the company is currently hiring for both technical and non-technical positions.
  • More info: A Winter 2014 TechStars and PayPal Start Tank company with more than 100,000 monthly active users.

MocoSpace

  • Location: Boston
  • Offers: A network where users meet people and play games for free on the web or from their mobile phones.
  • Funding to date: $10.5 million
  • Investors include: General Catalyst and Softbank
  • Employees: 15
  • More info: The company says it's the leading HTML5 game community with more than 30 games available to its more than 50 million registered members.

BoardProspects

  • Location: Boston
  • Offers: Social networking for organizations, corporations and current and prospective board members. Users can volunteer, apply for, or recruit candidates for boards of directors.
  • Funding to date: $3 million
  • Investors include: Angel investors such as public company directors, private company CEOs, hedge fund officers
  • Employees: 3
  • More info: The company, which launched in early 2012, was founded by two attorneys – Mark Rogers and Bobby Driscoll. BoardProspects is designed to encourage diversity of life experiences in boardrooms, giving everyone from entry-level employees to seasoned corporate executives the chance to find and advertise opportunities to serve on boards, according to the company.

Dribbble

  • Location: Salem
  • Offers: Social network for web designers, graphic designers, illustrators, icon artists, typographers, logo designers and other creatives who showcase work and current projects.
  • Funding to date: Self-funded
  • Investors include: Co-founders Rich Thornett and Dan Cederholm
  • Employees: 8
  • More info: The company eclipsed $1 million in revenue in 2013 from advertising, job postings, professional and company accounts and merchandise sales. The site currently has about 480,000 members

  • Location: Boston
  • Offers: A website for people to post obituaries, funeral notices and death records, and where users can come together during times of loss and grieving
  • Funding to date: About $4 million
  • Investors include: General Catalyst and Sequoia Capital

  • More info: The site reached more than 5 million unique visitors in January 2014

Twyxter

  • Location: Boston, at the PayPal Start Tank
  • Offers: Private, cloud-based social network that helps medium and large companies attract, engage and retain top talent. Employees use Twyxter to create groups and clubs, broadcast announcements and events, and sell, share and give away stuff in their own private peer-to-peer marketplace, according to the company.
  • Funding to date: Boostrapped
  • Investors include: Founders
  • Employees: 3
  • More info: Twyxter has launched pilot employee communities at several local employers, including the Boston office of PayPal.

HelpAroundTown

  • Location: Lexington
  • Offers: A social network that allows users to post requests for projects that don't require professionals or full-time employees. Those seeking work, such as high school and college students, can respond to the posts and get paid for jobs.
  • Funding to date: About $100,000, launching a seed funding round at the end of the month
  • Investors include: Friends and family
  • Employees: 3
  • More info: More than 1,200 jobs have been posted and the website has a user base of 1,600.

Achvr

  • Location: Boston
  • Offers: A social network that allows users to "achieve happier lives" by keeping track of and sharing first-time experiences and milestones.
  • Funding to date: $1.25 million
  • Investors include: Unnamed angel investors
  • Employees: 7

Quantia

  • Location: Waltham
  • Offers: Owns and operates QuantiaMD, a social network for physicians where members can share real-life experiences from clinical practices nationwide. One in 3 U.S. physicians visit QuantiaMD online and through the mobile app, according to the company.
  • Funding to date: $22 million
  • Investors include: Safeguard Scientifics, Fuse Capital
  • Employees: 75
  • More info: QuantiaMD’s expert faculty recently surpassed 1,000, covering all top 20 hospitals in U.S., according to the company. A typical physician spends 20 minutes per session consuming content and interacting with peers on QuantiaMD, making it an ideal platform to communicate and share knowledge, according to the company.

PatientsLikeMe

  • Location: Cambridge
  • Offers: A network for patients where users can connect with others who have the same disease or condition, and track and share their own experiences.
  • Funding to date: $43 million
  • Investors include: CommerceNet, Omidyar Network, Collaborative Seed and Growth Partners, Invus, LP
