California almonds are a multibillion-dollar business, and a growing one, up 1,000% in global consumption versus a decade ago. Last year they became California's top export crop, thanks
to China. But the nuts are thirsty, consuming more water than all of the indoor household water use of California's 39 million people. The $6.5 billion almond crop is in the spotlight as “The
poster child of all things bad in water,” almond grower Bob Weimer said.
