The severe avian flu outbreak in the Midwest has led to bird slaughters to try to contain the disease, and that has meant a rush by wholesalers and grocery stores to stock up. The price
of a carton of a dozen large eggs in the Midwest is up almost 17% since mid-April. Turkey prices are also up, after 5.6 million birds nationwide have died. Frozen hens used for home roasting
were up about 3% to $1.06 a pound. So far more than 26 million Iowa chickens have died, most of which lay eggs for food use.
