Spam Isn't Canned: Commercial Email Fails To Comply, Spam Rises

  • January 3, 2005
On average, only 3 percent of unsolicited commercial email complied with the federal anti-spam law during 2004, according to a report released Monday by MX Logic. The report, which comes one year after the so-called CAN-SPAM Act went into effect, also shows that the overall volume of spam actually rose in 2004, accounting for 77 percent of all email traffic, or one in 1.3 email messages detected through MX Logic's Threat Center during the year. According to MX Logic's analysis of a random sampling of 10,000 unsolicited commercial emails during each week of 2004, monthly CAN-SPAM compliance ranged from a low of 0.54 percent in July to a high of 7.0 percent in December.
