McIntyre Steps In As Acting Publisher Of 'Crain's Cleveland Business,' Campanelli Faces Legal Charges

Elizabeth McIntyre will add the role of acting publisher to her title as editor of Crain’s Cleveland Business, after former publisher John Campanelli was faced with charges of indecent exposure.

Mary Kramer, vice president and group publisher of Crain Communications Inc., made the announcement Thursday.

Crain Communications oversees Crain’s Cleveland Business and Crain’s Detroit Business.

Campanelli has been publisher of Crain’s Cleveland Business since December 2013. He is now facing charges related to incidents of indecent exposure in Hudson and Aurora, Ohio.

According to Aurora police, Campanelli exposed himself “at least three times” on Nov. 16 to a 23-year-old lifeguard at the Aurora Inn. He faces an additional charge of public indecency following his arrest Nov. 18 in Hudson. He will be charged on Dec. 30.

Campanelli has been placed on indefinite administrative leave, pending an internal review.

He told a reporter for Portage County's Record-Courier that he's currently being treated by doctors for "issues that happened to me as a boy that manifested themselves in this kind of way. “I am going to get better, and I’m getting help,” he added.

He also released a statement on Twitter that said doctors are “helping me work through some issues and finally get treatment for a childhood trauma that I’d kept secret for more than 30 years.”

McIntyre has been editor of Crain’s Cleveland Business since April 2014. Kramer stated that the company is “fortunate” that McIntyre can step in and lead the team in light of Campanelli’s absence.

Prior to joining Crain’s, McIntyre was vice president of communications and public relations at the National Association of College Stores in Oberlin.

She spent 20 years at The Plain Dealer, starting as a copy editor in 1990. McIntyre left The PD in November 2010 and joined the Cleveland Foundation as public relations officer, before joining the college stores association in 2013.
