The man behind the Kindle is behind Amazon’s bricks-and-mortar book store project. And it’s going beyond books. Steve Kessel, a longtime Amazon executive, joined Amazon in
1999 and left in 2011 or 2012. He’s back, but the specifics of Kessel’s project had been a secret internally, though the first store is open now in Seattle. A retail patent application
filed last year hints at a technology that lets customers pick an item from a shelf and automatically be charged for it upon exiting the store.
