In a move to possibly consolidate political coverage, newspaper owner Tronc and news startup Axios are reportedly in syndication talks.
According to The
Wall Street Journal, the newspaper conglomerate, which owns the Baltimore Sun and Chicago Tribune, is interested in striking a deal to run
Axios’s political coverage in the Los Angeles Times.
It is unclear, per reporting, what this would mean for Tronc’s D.C. bureau, which employs roughly 16
journalists. Financial details of the proposal are also unknown.

The collaboration could offer Axios a larger audience and a potential new revenue stream.
Currently, Axios, which launched about a year ago, relies on advertising as its source of revenue.
The plan highlights strategies previously outlined by both organizations. In the
past, Tronc has debated ways to cut costs, including closing its Washington, D.C., bureau and outsourcing its political coverage. However, senior editors at the Los Angeles
Times disputed the move.
Axios is seeking a more visible position within Los Angeles and Hollywood and would achieve that status through syndication.
The
potential for syndication in Tronc’s other publications is also a future option, as is news coverage beyond the political from Axios.
The news follows a rocky week
in which Ross Levinsohn, CEO of the
Los Angeles Times,
was being investigated for sexual harassment and bigoted remarks. He is currently taking an unpaid leave.
