'Atlantic' Taps White As Site's Deputy Editor

The Atlantic has upped Gillian B. White to deputy editor. She is the second deputy editor for the magazine's site.

White, who has been with The Atlantic for four years, files regular stories for the publication. Recent articles have included Serena Williams’ U.S. Open loss, the bull market and the whittling away of consumer protections.

Her promotion is part of the newsroom’s overall expansion. White will collaborate on story executions cross-platform. In addition, she will continue as a public face of The Atlantic as a moderator for many live events.

EIC Jeffrey Goldberg and editor of TheAtlantic.com Adrienne LaFrance wrote in a staff note that White’s role will “feed our newsroom’s growing ambitions.” That is expected to include 100 new staffers and investments across various divisions. Last month, The Atlantic relaunched its op-ed video series “The Atlantic Argument.”

White joined The Atlantic as a senior associate editor on the business section, where she wrote about the U.S. labor market and economic discrimination. She was promoted to senior editor earlier this year.

She shares the deputy editor title with Swati Sharma, who joined The Atlantic from The Washington Post earlier this year.

White recently led the interview series “Human Capital,” which examines how tech and globalization are changing work.

Previously, she had stints at Kiplinger and The Wall Street Journal.

Goldberg recently announced the promotions of Don Peck as top print editor of the magazine and Denise Wills to deputy editor, print.
