Multiple NBA stars are bypassing deals with Nike for other shoemakers including Puma and New Balance. New Balance landed a deal with Kawhi Leonard last month after he turned down a
multiyear contract worth $22 million from Nike. “The rush of upstart brands signing NBA players is a testament to the league’s ever-expanding popularity; even being tangentially associated
with the league gives the brands some credibility with young consumers, they insist,” according to The New York Times.
