'Variety' Extends Global Coverage To China, Hires Bureau Chief

Variety is expanding its international coverage into China, hiring Agence France-Presse reporter Rebecca Davis as its new China bureau chief.

China is the world’s second-largest movie market. Its TV industry has developed extensive ties with Hollywood in recent years.

Davis is based in Beijing and is a fluent Mandarin speaker. She has also worked in the Beijing offices of The New York Times and Le Monde.

Variety’s new China bureau is a testament to how important understanding this country and its market has become for the entertainment industry at large,” Davis stated.

She joins Variety’s growing team of international writers.

Variety has reporters based in London, Paris, Madrid, Beijing and Hong Kong. Variety also has a regular writer in Rome, as well as numerous freelancers around the world.

Davis will report to international editor Henry Chu, who is based in London. Variety writer Patrick Frater is also based in Hong Kong.
