'T' Brand Studio Hires James As Head of Creative, Vice Taps Khan To Oversee Client Partnerships

T Brand at The New York Times Company has been searching for its first head of creative since 2018. Today, it announced that Ben James will fill that roll.

James will be responsible for overseeing the creative, editorial and design teams at T Brand Studio.

He begins his new position on May 13.

James joins T from Wunderman Thompson (Formerly J. Walter Thompson). During his time with Wunderman Thompson, James held the role of Chief Creative Officer. He led the agency’s creative department in New York and creative teams across North America. He also co-created the agency’s Jump/Start program that reimagined internships, talent, diversity and inclusion through the lens of communications.

Prior to Wunderman Thompson, James was a creative director in the marketing department at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles and worked at Crispin Porter + Bogusky, TDA Advertising and Design, Y&R Chicago and Goodby Silverstein.

His work has been recognized by the Sundance Film Festival, the Webbys and the MTV Video Music Awards, among others.

Separately, Vice announced it has hired Cavel Khan as its new senior vice president North America, client partnerships. In his role, Khan will oversee all sales and account management teams across the Vice North America network.

Prior to joining Vice, Khan was senior manager on large client solutions at Twitter, where he lead teams across mid-market and large client solutions sales channels. In addition, he worked at Microsoft for eight years, building the company’s East Coast sales and service teams that support Bing. He also built ad partnerships across Microsoft’s display, mobile and gaming platforms.

Khan reports to Doug Jossem, Chief Revenue Officer, North America, who said the new hire's “empathetic approach to leadership, client relationships and strategy” will be a major asset in this new role.

In addition to Khan, Vice has announced several promotions. Those include: Tim Daugherty, SVP N.A., strategy and operations; Sarah Harrison, SVP N.A., creative studio; Ben Dietz, SVP N.A., partner concepts and development; and Dan Bowen, SVP N.A., production.
