NewsMatch Launches 2019 Campaign As Nonprofit Newsrooms Thrive

NewsMatch, the matching-gift campaign aimed at supporting nonprofit local newsrooms, launched its annual drive today. It’s estimated that nearly 200 nonprofit newsrooms will benefit from this year’s drive.

Through NewsMatch, foundations, philanthropists and corporate partners match individual gifts up to $1,000. The drive runs from November 1 through December 31. Donors can contribute through NewsMatch’s website or directly on the websites of participating newsrooms.

The 2019 NewsMatch drive comes as nonprofit newsrooms are thriving in a volatile media landscape. According to the latest INN Index report, more than half of all nonprofit newsrooms generated $500,000 or more in total revenue in 2018 and more than one-third reported $1 million-plus.

That revenue has resulted in jobs for nearly 3,000 people, 2,000 of those being new journalist positions.

As NewsMatch begins its fourth campaign, the platform reports raising more than $14 million for participating newsrooms. In 2018, NewsMatch raised $7.6 million in support of 154 newsrooms.

NewsMatch is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Democracy Fund, Facebook Journalism Project, Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, Jonathan Logan Family Foundation, Natasha and Dirk Ziff, REI Co-op and Present Progressive Fund at Schwab Charitable, in partnership with The Miami Foundation, the Institute for Nonprofit News and the News Revenue Hub.

Colorado newsrooms are supported through funding by the Gates Family Foundation in partnership with NewsMatch through the Colorado Media Project.
