People magazine released its
People of the
Year issue this week, with a special double issue featuring four different covers for the first time ever.
This year’s issue also features a first-ever quadruple print advertisement by
Geico. A fifth full page follows introducing the Geico Gecko as “Gecko of the Year.”
The design features the company’s mascot against a pale blue background with
People’s masthead above, a la its 'People of Year' design.
Gracing the issue’s covers are Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift. People
EIC Dan Wakeford explained the multiple covers were necessary because he couldn’t choose just one star.
Wakeford wrote in a letter introducing the issue: “Our People of the
Year issue celebrates the stars who have made an impact on our culture, the individuals who have moved us and entertained us. We wanted to see if we could soak up a little of their
wisdom.”
The Geico Gecko Tweeted: “Thank you, @people for choosing me as the #GeckoOfTheYear! It’s truly awesome to be included in the same issue as Jennifer Aniston, JLo,
Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift, who were selected as #PEOPLEoftheYear.”
