CCPA Drives Surge In Consumer Privacy Requests In Q1: Study

Privacy requests to brands surged in the first quarter, largely due to the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA), according to Early CCPA, Trends Shaping the Privacy Landscape, a study by DataGrail, provider of a compliance platform..

Requests totaled almost 50 per million consumer records, jumping sharply on Jan. 10 and rising steadily over the period to the current number, DataGrail reports based on its own client activity.

Of those requests, 39.6% have been for deletion of data, 33.3% for do-not-sell and 27.7% for access.

The CCPA requires that companies delete and refrain from selling an individual’s data — and provide access — on demand.

DataGrail estimates that manual processing of CCPA-based requests will costs firms between $140,000 and $275,000 per month, and it warns that brands should prepare to be ready to handle from 100 to 194 requests per million consumer records per year.
