Jim Rich Out As Editor-In-Chief Of G/O Media

Jim Rich has left his post as editorial director for G/O Media, owner of Deadspin, The Root, The Onion, Gizmodo, Jezebel and other titles.

His departure occurred “pretty suddenly” last Friday, due to a clash of management styles, a G/O Media spokesperson says.

There was no word yet on a successor for Rich.

The company has released this statement: "G/O Media and Jim Rich have parted company —i n his 2 years here he provided stability during a very important time for the company as we moved from a period of disruption (not uncommon after an ownership transition) to a much more stable platform. We appreciate all of his efforts. We thank him for his contributions, and wish him only the best in his future endeavors."

Rich denied his resignation was related to criticism of a Deadspin story about ESPN host Rachel Nichols, but would not specify a reason, according to The Daily Beast

According to The New York Times, Rich had authored an article stating: “Someone had sent Deadspin a recording of Ms. Nichols, made using a video camera that she had in her room to do TV hits, speaking to another person on the phone about her career.”

Rich, the former editor of the New York Daily News, led the paper to a Pulitzer Prize in 2017 for an investigation into police evictions. He joined G/O Media to edit Deadspin after almost two dozen employees had resigned in 2019 over “what employees characterized as editorial meddling,” the NYT reported in January 2020.
