'The Atlantic' Circulation Jumps To 830,000

The Atlantic has reached a paid circulation of 833,410 for the first half of 2021, the largest in its 164-year history, Editor In Chief Jeffrey Goldberg and CEO Nicholas Thompson announced in a message to the staff.

The number, which had been filed with the Alliance for Audited Media (AAM), includes both print and digital subscribers, including those on the iOS app and Apple News+.

Growth has gone from 474,274 two years ago to 252,242 in the first half of 2020.

This jump of 280,000 paid readers from the first half of 2020 to the same period in 2021 “came without discounting; in fact, we’ve been strategically moving readers away from low introductory offers to prices that reflect the true worth of our journalism,” the message continues.

However, last month, NBC News claimed that subscriber growth had plateaued and even slightly decline after a major surge during the pandemic and presidential election. Also, the magazine was on track to lose $10 million on top of the $20 million it had already lost.

Still, an internal presentation showed the loss would decline to a few million dollars in 2022, NBC continued.

Goldberg and Thompson stated in their message that the “average value of each subscription has grown a stunning 45% since the first half of 2019, right before we launched our paywall.”

The Atlantic reported around 70,000 in its first filing with AAM in 1916.
