Lawyers and companies spend a great deal of effort
trying to understand laws like GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). But 71% of U.S. consumers are unaware of these attempts to protect them, according to new research from Ground
Labs.
Moreover, the same percentage never or only rarely reads disclaimers about how their data is being used.
Still, 39% want
increased government regulations around data privacy. And they are careful with their information — 38% never provide their personal data and 40% are unlikely to provide it even when a company
requests it.
With good reason — 23% say they have had their data compromised in a breach, but have continued working with the affected company.
On a more
positive note, 68% believe data protection is a shared responsibility between the customer and the company.
“These new findings underscore the need for businesses to make a strong
commitment to their customers when it comes to keeping their data safe, protected and private, in order to inspire customer trust,” concludes Stephen Cavey, co-founder-chief evangelist at Ground
Labs.
Ground Labs surveyed 1,000 U.S. respondents of all ages and genders through the Google Surveys Publisher Network during August and September 2021.
