ASME Announces National Magazine Awards Nominees, 2022 ASME Awards Honorees

ASME, the American Society of Magazine Editors, on Thursday announced the finalists for the 57th annual National Magazine Awards. Sixty-five media organizations were nominated this year, with 15 titles — led by New York magazine with eight — receiving multiple nominations.

Other brands with multiple nominations were The New Yorker, with six nominations; The New York Times Magazine with five; and ProPublica with four. The Atlantic, Bloomberg Businessweek, Harper’s Magazine and Time each received three nominations, and seven organizations were nominated twice. They were 5280, AARP The Magazine, The Atavist, Audubon, National Geographic, Quanta and Stranger’s Guide.

A total of 1,074 entries were submitted by 224 titles in the 2022 National Magazine Awards. Print entries numbered 486; digital entries, 484; and multiplatform entries, 104.

National Magazine Awards winners will be announced at Brooklyn Steel, in Williamsburg, New York, on April 5. The ASME Awards and ASME NEXT Awards 2022 finalists and winners will also be honored.

The awards were judged by 209 journalists and educators. One hundred and eighteen were women and 91 were men. More than half were top editors, 10% were art directors and photo editors ,and 10% were educators.

First-time finalists were Airloom Media, Alta, The Athletic, Bloomberg Green, Columbus Monthly, Crooked Media, Insider, The Journal, Pineapple Street Studios, Pipe Wrench, Undark and The Yale Review.

Digital-first finalists include Airloom Media, The Atavist, The Athletic, Bloomberg Green, BuzzFeed News, C13Originals, Crooked Media, Eater, Emergence, Epicurious, ESPN.com, Grist, Insider, The Journal, Pineapple Street Studios, Pipe Wrench, ProPublica, Quanta, SELF, The Trace and Undark.
