Web Radio Listeners Come Back

MeasureCast, Inc., the company that measures streaming audience size and demographics every week, reported that Internet radio fans returned to the Net the week of December 31 - January 6 after a brief holiday hiatus.

This sent the MeasureCast Internet Radio Listening Index up 48% to an index value of 333, meaning the total time spent listening (TTSL) to streaming broadcasters has increased 333% since January 2001.

The slowest days for streaming radio were New Year's Eve and Jan. 1, the latter seeing only 5% of the week's listening. But the total number of hours streamed by stations measured by MeasureCast began to rise again on Wednesday, Jan 2. The peak listening day was Thursday, Jan. 3, with 24% of all TTSL for the week. Other weekly trends: 78% of all Internet radio listening occurred between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific. The peak listening hour was 9 a.m. Pacific, with 8% of total listening, and 15% of the week's listening took place over the weekend.

For the fourth week in a row, JazzFM and Virgin Radio finished one and two respectively in the MeasureCast Weekly Top 25 ranking. MEDIAmazing held steady at number three, while KING-FM moved up a notch to take the fourth spot. Sports talker ESPN Radio moved up two to notches to round out the top 5.

Other facts for the week of December 31, 2001 - Jan. 6, 2002

- The largest age group listening to Internet radio: 25-34 year-olds (30%).

- 55% of listeners were under 35; 26% were younger than 25; 7% were over 55.

- 69% of listeners were men; 31% were women.

- Top streaming nations include Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

- 33% of U.S. listeners were from the South, with the Western U.S. accounting for 29%.
