Michael Bloomberg, 80-year-old media magnate and former
New York City mayor, is interested in acquiring either Wall Street Journal parent Dow Jones or The Washington Post, Axios reports.
The
Journal would be acquired by Bloomberg L.P. from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., and the Post from owner Jeff Bezos.
Reuters reports that
Bloomberg has not approached Murdoch. And the Washington Post says it is not for sale.
Still, sources close to Bloomberg say he is interested. And combined with the Bloomberg
Terminal, such a purchase would create “an unparalleled business news behemoth,” Axios writes.
A merger with Dow Jones, which also owns Barrons and
MarketWatch, would probably also draw antitrust scrutiny, the reports state.
Bloomberg, the three-term New York mayor who briefly ran for U.S.
president, is still focused on politics, and supported anti-Trump Democratic candidates in 2020. His personal fortune is estimated at $76.8 billion.
