Gannett Reduces Printing At One Plant, Closing Another

Gannet is continuing its relentless cost-cutting and march from print to digital, with unhappy consequences for some employees. 

The company will in March off more 56 workers at its plant in Indianapolis, printer of the Indianapolis Star., USA Today, The Cincinnati Enquirer, Louisville-Courier, South Bend Tribune, Evansville Courier & Press and Muncie Star Press. 

The plant has 145 employees overall.  

Gannett will reduce use of the four printing presses at Georgetown Road in Indianapolis to two. 

“We are adjusting our staffing in Indianapolis as we adapt to industry conditions,” a Gannett spokesperson told the Indianapolis Star.

The company said, “Certain of the production employees working at that location will be affected by the closing of the production operation.”

Moving east, Gannett is closing its printing plant for The Democrat and Chronicle, of New York, at a cost of 108 jobs, the Democrat & Chronicle reports.

Printing of the paper and that of other newspapers is being moved out of out of state.  

Gannett has filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification to the New York State Department of Labor.  

Papers from Canandaigua, Utica, Binghamton, Ithaca, Corning, Hornell and Elmira, New York will be printed in Rockaway, New Jersey, located in the northern portion of that state. 

Gannett’s Erie, Pennsylvania, newspaper will be printed in Canton, Ohio.
