Declining advertising and other negative trends have led to the loss of another local publication: The Medford (Oregon) Tribune is shutting down on Friday after being in
business since 1909.
“This was a difficult business decision; the shuttering of this institution is a real loss for all constituents in Southern
Oregon,” writes Steven Saslow, CEO and publisher.
The paper closed its print edition in September 2022, but the move to all digital apparently was not enough to save
it. The last issue appears on Friday.
“Unfortunately, industrywide reductions, and in some cases complete elimination of national advertising spends for newspapers
(digital or printed editions), coupled with rising costs of content and the difficulty of hiring staff and managers have made continuing the Mail Tribune unsustainable,” Saslow continues.
Refunds for unused portions of subscriptions will be issued within 60 days, Saslow adds.
Jefferson Public Radio reports that Rosebud Media purchased the paper in 2015
from GateHouse Media.
