Not surprisingly, the Association of National Advertisers is lashing out against a proposed ad tax in Pennsylvania. The tax was included in a bill passed by the state's House of Representatives last
month that increases the personal income tax rate and extends the sales tax to a number of business services, including advertising, management consulting and public relations. In an ANA blog, the
association's Washington representative Dan Jaffe says: "Taxing advertising is not a new idea, just a bad one. Our detailed letter to the members of the Senate explains how an ad tax would be
counterproductive and bad for consumers, businesses and the media in Pennsylvania. It is critical for all marketers to contact the Governor and all members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly as
quickly as possible to express their opposition to this misguided proposal." He also points out that more than a decade ago, Florida imposed an ad tax and in the first six months there was an average
drop of about 12 percent in advertising in all of the major broadcast media markets in the state.
