Indiana Local News Initiative Names Bro Krift As Its First CEO

The Indiana Local News Initiative, a nonprofit journalism startup that has raised $10 million, has named Bro Krift as its founding CEO.

Krift will launch a network of community-center nonprofit newsrooms around the state, starting with Indianapolis. He will also be tasked with driving philanthropic support for partner organizations.

Previously, Krift served as executive editor of The Indianapolis Star, starting in 2021.

Prior to that, Krift led the Montgomery Advertiser, and also held the role of state editor, working with 12 newsrooms across Alabama and Louisiana. He also has worked as an editor or reporter in three newsrooms in Texas and on papers in Utah and Pennsylvania.

“Being a part of community and caring for it — that’s at the heart of local journalism,” Krift says. “With the strong local coalition behind this initiative, we have an opportunity to work together to strengthen our local media and build a better future for our state, by telling more stories that solve our communities’ conflicts, rather than merely pointing them out.”
