Gannett has named Mark Russell as vice president and region editor for the South. 

The new appointment includes two Tier 1 Gannett sites in Nashville and Knoxville and 15 other newsrooms in Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina. Russell will remain executive editor of The Commercial Appeal in Memphis. 

Previously, Russell has served at The Wall Street Journal, The Plain Dealer, The Boston Globe and The Orlando Sentinel. He serves on the board of the Columbia Missourian newspaper at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
