'Courant Community,' Connecticut Weekly, Slated For Closure

The Courant Community, a Connecticut news weekly, is shutting down after its January 18 edition.

The paper has been in business since 1949, according to a story in Patch. It had been delivered for free to homes in the area.

It was started by Kenneth Hovland and his wife Carol, who had moved to Vernon, Connecticut from Iowa. First, they started a product called The Reminder, which lasted for 15 issues.

"FYI, the Courant is shutting down Courant Community after the edition of Jan. 18. So, the last remnants of what was the Reminder are now gone," said a social media posting, according to Patch

A charming aspect of Patch’s coverage is a nostalgic photo of Hovland’s old manual typewriter. The machine is now on display at the Vernon Historical Society.
