'The Baltimore Banner' Expands Coverage, Adds Reporters

The Baltimore Banner, the nonprofit  news outlet said to compete with The Baltimore Sun, is expanding beyond the city limits.

The news broke in Axios, and has been confirmed by Kimi Yoshino, the Banner’s editor in chief. Along with this, the Banner has been hiring.

“We are expanding,” Yoshino said in an email. “And yes, we’ve hired two reporters in Howard County and a reporter in Anne Arundel County (in addition to our Annapolis columnist Rick Hutzell).”

Yoshino adds, “We’re also adding a second reporter in Baltimore County (in addition to one general reporter and one who has been focused on education). We are also expanding into Business with two business reporters.”

The Banner was launched in 2022 in the wake of Alden Global Capital’s takeover of Tribune Publishing properties nationwide, including The Baltimore Sun.

The Sun, once home to H.L. Mencken, was subsequently acquired by David D. Smith, the chairman of the Sinclair Broadcast Group, from Alden Global Capital for an undisclosed sum.
