The Sunday Chicago Tribune was the last to
be printed at the Tribune’s long-time Freedom Center plant on the Chicago River.
Starting on Monday, the publication will be printed in Schaumburg, Illinois. The
Chicago printing plant will be replaced by a Bally’s casino.
The old facility was to print 160,000 copies of the Sunday Chicago Tribune and 49,000 copies of the
Sunday Chicago Sun-Times.
The Sun-Times is also moving its printing to Schaumburg.
The Monday Tribune will be the first edition in
this paper’s 170-year history not to be printed in Chicago.
“For more than four decades, the Freedom Center has played a pivotal role for the Chicago Tribune,” says Par
Ridder, the newspaper’s general manager, according to the Tribune. “However, it was built in and for a different time. Now, we look forward to moving to a modern production
facility in Schaumburg, which is a better fit for our current and future needs.”
