The Greer Citizen, a newspaper serving upstate South Carolina, will publish its final edition on Wednesday of this week.
“The national decline of print journalism and the corresponding community move from newspaper advertising to online outlets have made financial sustainability impossible, leading
us to make this inevitable decision,” says William Buchheit, a staff writer for The Greer Citizen, according to a local report.
The family-run
Buchheit News Management acquired the Citizen in 2006.
The impact on the staff was not clear at deadline. But ownspeople are both celebrating and
mourning the publication.
“The Greer Citizen has served our community since 1918, telling the stories of Greer and its people and keeping its
government accountable,” says David Lovegrove, director of Greer Heritage Museum, in a Fox broadcast.
Lovegrove adds, “The community has taken the news very
hard. There are a lot of people who are extremely disappointed, frustrated.” The Citizen has been “the central point of news for our town,” he
continues.
